Pipes stop projections

After a projection, everything to its right runs on each element. A pipe | ends the projection, so what follows sees the whole result.

Examples

Example 1Inside the projection

Document

{
  "team": "Platform",
  "office": { "city": "Berlin", "floor": 3 },
  "members": [
    { "name": "Ada", "age": 36, "role": "lead", "active": true,
      "email": "[email protected]", "skills": ["rust", "sql"] },
    { "name": "Linus", "age": 28, "role": "dev", "active": true,
      "email": null, "skills": ["c", "shell"] },
    { "name": "Grace", "age": 45, "role": "dev", "active": false,
      "skills": ["cobol"] },
    { "name": "Alan", "age": 41, "role": "qa", "active": true,
      "email": "[email protected]", "skills": [] }
  ]
}

Query

members[*].skills[0]
  1. skills[0] Runs inside the projection: index 0 of each member's own skills → the first skill of every member.

Result

["rust","c","cobol"]

Example 2After a pipe

Document

{
  "team": "Platform",
  "office": { "city": "Berlin", "floor": 3 },
  "members": [
    { "name": "Ada", "age": 36, "role": "lead", "active": true,
      "email": "[email protected]", "skills": ["rust", "sql"] },
    { "name": "Linus", "age": 28, "role": "dev", "active": true,
      "email": null, "skills": ["c", "shell"] },
    { "name": "Grace", "age": 45, "role": "dev", "active": false,
      "skills": ["cobol"] },
    { "name": "Alan", "age": 41, "role": "qa", "active": true,
      "email": "[email protected]", "skills": [] }
  ]
}

Query

members[*].skills | [0]
  1. | [0] The pipe ends the projection, so [0] now indexes the whole list of skill lists → the first member's skills.

Result

["rust","sql"]
