Array indexes

[n] selects an element (zero-based); a negative number counts from the end.

Examples

Example 1The first member

Document

{
  "team": "Platform",
  "office": { "city": "Berlin", "floor": 3 },
  "members": [
    { "name": "Ada", "age": 36, "role": "lead", "active": true,
      "email": "[email protected]", "skills": ["rust", "sql"] },
    { "name": "Linus", "age": 28, "role": "dev", "active": true,
      "email": null, "skills": ["c", "shell"] },
    { "name": "Grace", "age": 45, "role": "dev", "active": false,
      "skills": ["cobol"] },
    { "name": "Alan", "age": 41, "role": "qa", "active": true,
      "email": "[email protected]", "skills": [] }
  ]
}

Example 2The last member

Document

{
  "team": "Platform",
  "office": { "city": "Berlin", "floor": 3 },
  "members": [
    { "name": "Ada", "age": 36, "role": "lead", "active": true,
      "email": "[email protected]", "skills": ["rust", "sql"] },
    { "name": "Linus", "age": 28, "role": "dev", "active": true,
      "email": null, "skills": ["c", "shell"] },
    { "name": "Grace", "age": 45, "role": "dev", "active": false,
      "skills": ["cobol"] },
    { "name": "Alan", "age": 41, "role": "qa", "active": true,
      "email": "[email protected]", "skills": [] }
  ]
}

Query

members[-1].name
  1. [-1] A negative index counts from the end: the last element → "Alan".

Result

"Alan"

Try it in the playground

Good to know

  • An index past the end gives null: members[9].name is null.
